The Rotunda tops ‘Green Oscars’

Article Date: 24/01/2010

The Rotunda has won the equivalent of the ‘Green Oscars’ in recognition of its waste strategy, which has reduced vehicle emissions, introduced waste recycling and reduced tenant waste costs.

The entertainment and cinema destination in Kingston upon Thames was awarded a ‘Green Guardian’ for its pioneering waste strategy by the Kingston Guardian newspaper.

The waste management system was introduced in April 2008. It enables all tenants’ rubbish, both cardboard and general, to be separated and managed on-site.

An estimated 182 tonnes of rubbish is created by The Rotunda each year, with an additional 1,500 wheelie bins of full glass now being re-used each year as a result of the system.

Not only is the waste strategy helping The Rotunda to maximize resources, but it is also helping to preserve UK forestation by contributing towards a sustainable environment while at the same time reducing pollution levels with waste collections reduced from four collections per week to just two.

Says Centre Manager, David Harper: “The Green Guardian award is a great recognition of all the hard work and effort by our restaurants and entertainment venues as well as the centre management team in making our waste strategy a reality. The results of the waste strategy speak volumes about our commitment to protecting our environment and our local community.”

Triumphant tenants at The Rotunda decided to celebrate their success with Dysart Community School for children with severe learning difficulties. Following the award ceremony on Monday 25th January, The Rotunda donated their prize of an Apple Tree to Dysart School in Surbiton.

John Prior Head Teacher said "The Rotunda has not only done their bit for the environment by recycling, they have also contributed to increasing the number of trees planted at the School with the many benefits that this will bring."
